Dear OONL Colleagues,
I hope this message finds you well, taking care of yourselves and enjoying the beautiful weather. I want to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you for your exceptional leadership and unwavering support in fostering nursing leadership and professional growth.
I would like to share some highlights from the OONL Board meeting held on April 21:
-
We are thrilled to introduce the Nursing Network Platform, a comprehensive database that replaces traditional pen-and-paper methods. This platform will facilitate membership tracking, streamline operations and provide a wealth of valuable data.
-
Mark your calendars for our 50th Anniversary Conference, which will take place from Nov. 8-10 in Polaris, Columbus, Ohio. We are excited to celebrate this significant milestone and look forward to a memorable event.
I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to network with all of you at the OHA conference and the CNO Networking Roundtable. These events provide invaluable opportunities to connect, learn and grow together.
Once again, thank you for your tireless dedication and commitment to our profession. Your contributions make a difference every day. Stay safe and resilient as we continue to navigate these challenging times.

OONL Members Attend AONL Conference
Several OONL members attended the AONL annual conference in Anaheim, CA. The theme of this year’s conference was “Inspiring Leaders”-and it lived up to its name. Kathie Hayes, President, and Melissa Kline, President-Elect, attended the affiliates meeting during the pre-conference, and updates will be shared at the June OONL Board meeting. The conference officially kicked off with keynote speaker Sekou Andrews, a spoken word poet. Andrews spoke about the power of storytelling and how it can inspire change. His motivational speech used rhythmic prose and personal anecdotes to inspire us to become more authentic leaders.

During the week, attendees heard several excellent sessions on multiple leadership topics and were able to visit the vendor hall. The closing keynote, Phil Hansen, was also excellent. He encouraged attendees to think differently and not allow limitations to get in the way. And the portraits we had to draw of each other were quite funny!
One of the most meaningful moments of the conference for OONL members who attended came not at the actual conference but at a vendor happy hour where they met Tena Barnes Carraher, widow of J. Patrick Barnes.

OONL members met with Tena Barnes Carraher, Co-founder of the DAISY Foundation (second from the left).

|
Hearing her story and how the DAISY Foundation got started in her own words was inspiring! Tena exuded kindness, passion and grace.
Other highlights of the week included seeing old and meeting new colleagues, interacting with poster presenters who highlighted great patient and staff outcomes and having some time to refresh and rejuvenate!

Currently the greater Cleveland chapter is in the midst of their membership drive. We focused on communicating to Health System Leadership – Chief Nurse Executives to consider supporting their nursing leaders with a two-year membership. A bulk membership process was formulated to assist with efficiency of achieving large numbers of new and renewing members. So far, the response has been strong. We also “kicked-off” our first formal Mentoring Program in March.
Greater Cleveland Organization for Nursing Leadership Mentorship Program
Thank you for your application to the GCONL Mentorship Program. We are thrilled to announce, during national mentoring month, you have been paired with a nurse leader and congratulate you on taking this step in your career. As an affiliate chapter of the Ohio Organization of Nursing Leadership (OONL), Ohio Hospital Association, we strive to uphold the Vision and Mission, serving as a catalyst to promote excellence in nursing. This new program is designed to pair you with a member of our chapter who will serve as a role model, advocate, and motivator. Based on your input and through careful consideration of the knowledge, skills, and leadership of the chapter leader that we believe will be a best fit for you, we’ve paired you with Karen Gates. We launched the program this spring at the GCONL chapter meeting on March 23. Following, your assigned mentor will establish a plan with you that will continue through December 2023. Congratulations and All the Best,
